Composition
From the 2002 Series 3 Incense collection, each scent devoted to a world religion - Ouarzazate represents Islam. Incense, green tea and black pepper open into guaiac wood, sage, nutmeg, labdanum and anise, over red berries, kashmir wood, jasmine, musk and vanilla. Warm desert spices around frankincense.
To me this smells like a desert courtyard long after sunset, in that hour when the stone still holds the day's heat and someone has lit frankincense in a brass brazier. The incense is dry and austere, not sweet at all, cut through by green tea and a crack of black pepper — like a cold wind crossing hot sand. Guaiac wood and sage drift underneath, resinous and grey-green, with anise lending a strange, almost medicinal sweetness. Hours later it turns unexpectedly tender — red berries, jasmine, a whisper of vanilla settling into musk, like finding a hidden garden behind a mosque wall. But it never loses its severity. This is worship, not decoration: beautiful, remote, and entirely uninterested in being liked. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
