Composition
A 2009 collaboration with style icon Daphne Guinness, composed by Antoine Lie. Bitter orange, incense and saffron open into centifolia rose, Tunisian jasmine, tuberose and iris, over patchouli, oud, amber and vanilla. Opulent, floral-oriental and unapologetically dramatic.
To me Daphne smells like a flower market inside a temple courtyard — mountains of centifolia roses and jasmine and tuberose laid out at dawn, but someone is burning incense and saffron right beside the stalls, so the sweetness never stays innocent for long. Bitter orange cuts through the top like a squeezed peel, keeping the whole thing from going syrupy. The drydown is where it gets serious: oud and patchouli rise up under the amber and vanilla, turning the flowers smoky and resinous, like petals left too close to the diya flame. It is beautiful but it has teeth. I love it on evenings when I want flowers with a shadow. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
