Composition
Released in 2008 to mark the opening of the house's Beijing store - 8 is a lucky number in Chinese culture. Turmeric, coriander and papyrus open into saffron, geranium and incense, over amber and patchouli. Spicy, resinous and golden.
To me this is the inside of an Indian spice grinder's shop at dusk — turmeric root staining everything gold, coriander seeds cracking under the wheel, papyrus like dry paper between the sacks. The heart goes smoky and almost sacred: saffron threads and incense curling through geranium's green sharpness, the way a market near a temple smells of both trade and prayer. Later it darkens into amber and patchouli, earthy and animal-warm, like the wooden counter after a day of hands. There is nothing soft or crowd-pleasing here; it is built from raw materials and refuses to apologize. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
