Labdanum
“Dark, leathery resin with an ambery, animalic warmth — the backbone of classic amber accords.”
Labdanum is the dark, resinous heart of amber perfumes, harvested from the sticky leaves of the rockrose shrub that grows wild around the Mediterranean. It smells deep and balsamic, like leather, dried fruit and warm resin with a faint animalic growl underneath. Perfumers prize it as the backbone of amber accords and oriental compositions, where it adds richness, tenacity and that mysterious smoky-sweet depth. It pairs beautifully with vanilla, incense and oud. In India, labdanum-heavy scents are winter champions, thriving in cool dry air and lasting for hours. In humid monsoon weather it can turn a little dense, so apply lightly. Look for it in classic orientals and resinous attars where it gives that unmistakable warm, leathery embrace.
