Composition
The Buddhism and Shinto entry of the 2002 Series 3 Incense collection. Coffee and cypress open into immortelle, teak wood and cedar, over amber, incense, patchouli and vetiver. Serene, woody and meditative.
To me this smells like 5am in a Kyoto temple courtyard — cold stone, cypress trees dripping with last night's rain, and a monk somewhere grinding coffee beans, which should not work here but somehow does. The immortelle brings that strange curry-maple warmth, like incense smoke folding into something almost edible. Then the woods settle in: teak and cedar, old and silent as prayer beads worn smooth by a thousand hands. Patchouli and vetiver rise from the damp earth beneath, amber glowing faintly like the last lamp left burning in the shrine. It is not a fragrance. It is sitting still.
