Composition
The iconic Kenzo creation by Alberto Morillas imagines the scent of a scentless red poppy as a powdery floral. Bulgarian rose, hawthorn and cassis lead over parma violet and jasmine, with opoponax lending a soft resinous depth. White musk, vanilla and incense form a gentle, lingering base.
To me this smells like the idea of a poppy that never actually existed. The black currant is the first thing — tart, dark berries crushed on the tongue — and then a wave of powder hits: Parma violet, rose, soft as talc on a grandmother's dresser, hawthorn adding something almondy and shy. Opoponax and a thread of incense give the powder warmth, like sunlight through a dusty window, and the white musk-vanilla base is pure softness. It is strange and tender and completely its own thing.
