Composition
JoAnne Bassett's 2009 travel scent capturing a Madagascan dusk. Lotus opens over Virginia cedar and freesia, drying down to soft vanilla. Serene, woody-floral and gently warm.
This smells like the exact minute the sun drops behind the hills in the Nilgiris — I know it says Madagascar, but the feeling is universal. Lotus opens cool and watery over cedar, like a lake at dusk, and the freesia drifts through it like mist. There is something beautifully still here, nothing shouting. Then the vanilla comes, soft as the last warm light on your skin, and the whole thing settles into this serene woody-floral hum. It is not a perfume trying to impress anyone. It is a twenty-minute pause in a bottle, and I love it for that. Beginner-friendly.
