Composition
The Orthodox Christianity entry of the 2002 Series 3 Incense collection, named for the Russian monastery town. Pine and birch open into violet, incense and hinoki wood, settling on cedarwood and violet. Cold, coniferous and quietly spiritual.
To me this smells like stepping into a stone chapel in Zagorsk in the dead of winter, when the air outside is all pine resin and snow and the door shuts behind you with a heavy wooden thud. Birch logs crackle somewhere out of sight, and thin ribbons of incense smoke rise through cold blue light falling from high windows. It is freezing and holy at the same time. Underneath, violet comes through like crushed petals pressed between the pages of an old prayer book — powdery, quiet, a little melancholic. The hinoki and cedar keep it from ever feeling warm; this is a scent that stands very still. I wear it when I want to feel small in a good way. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
