Composition
From the 2001 Series 2 Red collection. Red rum opens into California redwood, mahogany and kara-karounde, settling on agarwood oud and opoponax. A deep, resinous wood portrait.
This is a glass of dark rum drunk inside a hollowed-out redwood, and I mean that as the highest compliment. The opening is all boozy heat — red rum poured over mahogany shavings, sweet and a little dangerous. Then the woods take over: California redwood, towering and resinous, the kind of tree you have to tilt your whole head back to see. As it settles, the oud and opoponax arrive like sap bleeding from bark — thick, balsamic, almost edible. It reminds me of the inside of an old ship's hull, or a cigar box that's been closed for thirty years. There is nothing fresh or easy here; it is dense, dark timber from start to finish. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
