Composition
Cuir Mauresque is Serge Lutens' 1996 leather chypre, a love letter to the Andalusian night. Bitter orange and mandarin open into a heart of jasmine, carnation and cloves, before sinking into a rich base of leather, amber, musk and labdanum. Dark, animalic and sumptuous — leather perfumery at its most romantic.
To me this smells like an Andalusian night — bitter orange and mandarin flashing bright for a moment before the whole thing sinks into darkness. Jasmine, carnation and cloves smolder in the heart, spicy and floral at once, like embers glowing under petals. And then the leather. Dark, animalic, ambered leather over labdanum and musk — the smell of a saddle left out in the warm night air. This is Lutens' love letter to leather, and it does not do subtle. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
