Composition
Fille en Aiguilles (Girl in Needles) is Serge Lutens' 2009 coniferous oriental, inspired by the incense-smoked pines of a Moroccan forest. Pine needles, fir resin and frankincense pierce through dried fruit, rum, cinnamon and plum, settling into vetiver, laurel and musk. Cool, resinous and meditative — a walk through a cathedral of evergreens.
To me this smells like walking into a Moroccan pine forest at night where someone has been burning incense among the trees for hours. Pine needles and fir resin pierce the cold air first — sharp, green, almost medicinal — and then frankincense rises through them like smoke through a cathedral. Dried fruit, rum, cinnamon and plum warm the edges, the way a flask of something strong warms a winter walk. Vetiver, laurel and musk ground it in dark earth. It is coniferous and resinous and meditative, and it demands a certain mood: this is not a perfume, it's a place you have to be ready to enter. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
