Composition
Vitriol d'Oeillet is Serge Lutens' 2011 explosive carnation, composed with Christopher Sheldrake. Clove, pepper and nutmeg ignite a heart of carnation, lily and Turkish delight, grounded in sandalwood, styrax and balsamic woods. Spicy, peppery and theatrical — the carnation as a firework.
This is not a perfume, it's a detonation. Clove, pepper and nutmeg ignite on the skin like a match struck in a spice warehouse, and then the carnation explodes — theatrical, peppery, almost violent — with lily and Turkish delight swirling through the smoke like stage effects. Sandalwood, styrax and balsamic woods try to calm it down, and mostly fail. It smells like backstage at a decadent theatre: greasepaint, crushed flowers, danger. Lutens at his most gloriously unhinged — magnificent, but this carnation bites. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
