Composition
Released in 2012, composed by Bertrand Duchaufour as a tribute to the grand chypres. Galbanum, aldehydes and citrus open into plum and florals, over oakmoss, castoreum, benzoin and leather. A monumental, animalic chypre.
To me this smells like the private chambers of a Roman emperor — beautiful and faintly dangerous. Galbanum and aldehydes cut green and sharp as crushed laurel, then the flowers arrive: hyacinth, iris, rose, jasmine, all imperial and precise. But underneath, the animal stirs — castoreum dark and musky, leather worn soft, oakmoss like damp stone in a tomb. Balsams and vanilla try to sweeten the ending. They only partly succeed. This is perfume as power: magnificent, feral, and not remotely interested in being liked. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
