Composition
Ylang-YlangStar noteReleased in 2006, composed by Francis Kurkdjian. Bergamot, Amalfi lemon and mandarin open into ylang-ylang and jasmine, over sandalwood, vanilla and tonka bean. A radiant dawn of citrus and white flowers.
To me this smells like the first light over the Ganges at Varanasi — that impossible moment when the water turns to hammered gold and the air is all Amalfi lemon and mandarin, bright enough to hurt. Bergamot fizzes like the first sip of nimbu pani, and then the white flowers arrive: ylang-ylang creamy as malai, jasmine opening petal by petal. The promise of the title is kept in the drydown — sandalwood and vanilla, warm as sun on old stone steps, tonka rounding it into something almost edible. It glows rather than shines. If dawn had a signature, Kurkdjian would have written it like this. Beginner-friendly.
