Composition
A 2009 fragrance by Patricia de Nicolai, named for the Julien Gracq novel. Orange, pineapple and galbanum open into orange flower, incense, tuberose and ylang-ylang, over vanilla, amber and musk. Exotic, narcotic and golden.
To me this is the Mediterranean as imagined from a Bombay balcony. Orange and pineapple burst open first, bright and golden, and then it turns — galbanum goes green and strange, incense smoke starts curling through the flowers, tuberose and ylang heavy and narcotic like a temple garden at night. It's the moment a beach holiday becomes something deeper. Vanilla and amber and musk pull it all into warmth, like sunset on skin. It's dramatic but never difficult — a blockbuster with an art-house middle. Beautiful and completely wearable. Beginner-friendly.
