Composition
Vanille Tonka is a feminine eau de parfum from Parfums de Nicolaï, launched in 1997 and composed by Patricia de Nicolaï. Amalfi lemon, basil and mandarin orange open into a heart of cinnamon, black pepper, carnation and African orange flower. The base rests on vanilla, tonka bean and incense. A sophisticated, non-gourmand vanilla with an elegant smoky incense drydown.
To me this smells like a Parisian patisserie that also sells incense — Amalfi lemon and basil snapping bright at the opening, cinnamon and black pepper warming the middle like a chai you did not order but love, carnation and orange flower going powdery-soft. Then vanilla and tonka bean melt in, deep and golden, with incense smoking gently underneath. Patricia de Nicolaï made sophistication smell delicious. A grown-up gourmand with perfect manners. Carnation goes powdery-spicy in the heart, like a vintage sachet. Beginner-friendly.
