Composition
Rose Pivoine is a feminine eau de parfum from Parfums de Nicolaï, launched in 1998 and composed by Patricia de Nicolaï. Per the brand's official notes, ambrette seeds, raspberry, black currant and bergamot open into a heart of rose, geranium, violet, peony, orris butter and black pepper. Sandalwood, incense and musk form the base.
To me this smells like a Parisian flower stall in June — ambrette seeds musky-sweet first, raspberry and black currant juicy as jam, bergamot bright. Then the roses: real Damask rose, not candy rose, with geranium's green bite, violet and peony softening, orris butter powdering, black pepper crackling through like a secret. Sandalwood, incense and musk dry it down elegant and dry. Patricia de Nicolaï's rose, done properly — fruity, peppery, grown-up. A rose for people who think they don't like rose. Beginner-friendly.
