Composition
La Couche du Diable (The Devil's Bed) is Serge Lutens' 2008 woody chypre inspired by sin. An oud accord and cistus jam open over a fruity complex and rose, melting into labdanum, amber and musk. Diabolical yet sumptuous — a smoky, resinous veil of indulgence and remorse.
To me this smells like sin with good lighting — oud accord first, smoky and resinous as temple dhoop, tangerine bright as a warning, rose dark and jammy underneath. Cistus jam and the fruity complex make it sticky-sweet, cinnamon warming it like spiced wine, and then labdanum, amber and musk melt into something thick and penitential, like confession after the party. Diabolical yet sumptuous — a smoky, resinous veil. It smells expensive and slightly dangerous, which is the whole point. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
