Composition
De Profundis is Serge Lutens' 2011 gothic chrysanthemum, a scent of cold stone and temple incense. Chrysanthemum, galbanum and violet leaf open over a heart of clary sage and dried fruit, sinking into leather, woody notes and vetiver. Somber, green and funereal — beauty in the depths.
To me this smells like chrysanthemum garlands left on cold temple stone after the mourners have gone. Galbanum and violet leaf open green and funereal, clary sage drifts like incense smoke that has lost its fire, and dried fruits add a strange, sweet decay. Then leather and vetiver rise from underneath — dark, woody, solemn. It is beautiful the way a requiem is beautiful. Serge Lutens called it beauty in the depths, and he meant depths.
