Composition
Chêne (Oak) is Serge Lutens' 2004 forest portrait, a single-tree study in green depth. Oakmoss, cedar and rum open into a heart of dried fruit and cognac, grounded in sandalwood, vanilla and woody notes. Austere, mossy and contemplative — standing alone in an ancient oak grove.
To me this smells like the inside of a hundred-year-old oak, if you could climb inside it. Oakmoss is the whole world here — green, damp, earthy, like the forest floor after rain — with cedar rising tall and straight through it, rum adding a dark, woody warmth. Then the booze deepens: cognac and dried fruits, dark and oaky, like Christmas cake soaked in a cellar. The sandalwood and vanilla soften the edges but never tame them. This is not a perfume about a forest — it is the forest, unfiltered, and it does not care if you find it beautiful. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
