Composition
Borneo 1834 is Serge Lutens' 2005 tribute to the great patchoulis, named for the year a French botanist catalogued the plant. Camphorous green patchouli is wrapped in cistus, cardamom, cacao and white flowers, drying down to opoponax and vetiver. Dense, chocolatey and earthy — patchouli at its most opulent.
To me this smells like the floor of a rainforest in Borneo — patchouli thick and green underfoot, cardamom crushed on the path, camphor rising off wet leaves. Cacao and white flowers bloom strange in the dark, and opoponax and vetiver underneath are resin and root, ancient and unbothered. The cistus is resinous and almost leathery, and the white flowers are a strange bright flash in all that dark — like orchids growing out of a swamp. This is patchouli with its boots on: earthy, camphorous, magnificent. It does not do small talk. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
