Composition
Vetiver 46 is Le Labo's 2006 woody vetiver by Mark Buxton, built from 46 essences around smoky Haitian vetiver. Bergamot, black pepper and clove open into vetiver, cedar, olibanum and labdanum, over guaiac wood, amber and vanilla. Dry, deep and meditative — not for the faint of heart.
To me this is a monsoon afternoon in a vetiver distillery — black pepper and clove cracking in the damp air, bergamot bright as lightning, and then the vetiver itself: smoky, green, root-deep, rising off hot copper stills. Olibanum and labdanum smoke at the edges, guaiac and amber glowing underneath like banked coals. The vanilla at the base is barely sweet, more like warm woodsmoke, and it keeps the vetiver from going austere — fire and root, held in balance. Le Labo's smokiest vetiver: dry, dark, and uncompromising. It smells like earth deciding to burn. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
