Composition
Ylang 49 is Le Labo's 2015 chypre-floral by Frank Voelkl, an ode to tropical ylang-ylang with darker undertones. Citrus opens into ylang-ylang and Tahitian gardenia, followed by patchouli, oakmoss, vetiver, sandalwood and benzoin. A walk in the woods with a voluptuous bouquet — moody, mossy and sensual.
To me this smells like a tropical garden after a storm — ylang-ylang and Tahitian gardenia huge and voluptuous, almost too much, citrus flashing like lightning before it. Then the dark comes: patchouli, oakmoss, vetiver, sandalwood, benzoin — a forest floor under the flowers, mossy and earthy and damp. A walk in the woods with a bouquet you can't put down. Moody, mossy, sensual — the chypre for people who find chypres too polite. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
