Composition
Poivre 23 is Le Labo's 2008 London city exclusive by Nathalie Lorson — the house's pepper statement. True Bourbon pepper with cistus labdanum opens warm and ultra-spicy, over guaiac wood and cedar, into vanilla, patchouli, incense, styrax and sandalwood. Dark, resinous and ambery — the spice of all spices in the limelight.
To me this smells like a London gentlemen's club during a thunderstorm. The pepper is the star — true Bourbon pepper, sharp and woody, cracked fresh over everything — with labdanum adding a warm amber glow like firelight on dark wood, citrus brightening the edges. Guaiac and cedar give it a smoky, pencil-shaving dryness, and incense and styrax drift through the base like smoke under a door, vanilla and patchouli and sandalwood holding it all together. It is dry, spicy, and quietly intense — the kind of scent that fills a room without ever raising its voice. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
