Composition
Fleurs d'Oranger, launched in 2003 and created by Christopher Sheldrake, is Serge Lutens's tribute to his 1968 arrival in Morocco — an uplifting orange blossom bouquet Lutens calls 'the smell of happiness'. Orange blossom, neroli and citrus open onto jasmine, Indian tuberose, white rose and hibiscus over cumin, musk and a wood accord.
Fleurs d'Oranger is an orange grove in full bloom — a powerful, narcotic burst of orange blossom and tuberose that feels like sunlight made liquid, softened by jasmine and white rose into voluptuous clouds of white. A whisper of cumin at the base gives it a dark, animalic sliver that keeps it from ever being simple or sweet. It is ethereal yet potent, glittering yet warm — the white floral for people who find other white florals boring. In India it is glorious in spring and summer evenings. Not for beginners — its intensity, tuberose depth and that cumin edge reward experienced noses; try a sample before committing.
