Composition
AngelicaAmbre Sultan, launched in 2000 and created by Christopher Sheldrake, is Serge Lutens's defining amber — inspired by a fragment of amber resin picked up in the souks of Marrakech. Coriander, bay leaf and myrtle open onto oregano and angelica over a dense base of amber, resins, benzoin, myrrh, sandalwood, vanilla and patchouli.
Ambre Sultan is an amber overdose — deep, dark and resinous, like breathing inside a Moroccan apothecary of dried herbs, balms and golden resins. An herbal cap of coriander, bay leaf, myrtle and oregano lifts the dense amber-benzoin-myrrh base, adding an almost edible savouriness, while vanilla keeps it approachable. It is the gold standard against which every amber is measured: sophisticated, warm and quietly majestic. In India it belongs to winter nights and festive evenings, when its warmth can truly breathe. Not for beginners — start with a sample; this is powerful, resinous perfumery that demands confidence.
