Composition
Oud Palao is Diptyque's 2015 first foray into oud, an oriental woody eau de parfum. Robust Laotian oud meets Bulgarian rose, wrapped in tobacco, rum, camphor and cistus labdanum over creamy sandalwood, Indonesian patchouli and Madagascar vanilla. Inspired by Moroccan zellige tiles — an opulent, resinous rose-oud.
To me this smells like a palace room lined with Moroccan zellige tiles, where someone has been burning oud and pouring rum since noon. Bulgarian rose opens lush and dark, camphor cuts through like cold air, and then Laotian oud arrives — deep, animal, magnificent — wrapped in tobacco and labdanum. Sandalwood, patchouli and vanilla try to soften it, and partly succeed. But this is an opulent, resinous beast of a scent. Wear it like armour, not like a accessory. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
