Oud 27 is Le Labo's 2009 first global launch since the brand's debut, a minimalistic wearable oud by Vincent Schaller. Agarwood and civet meet ambergris, Virginia cedar and Bulgarian rose over musk, amber, vetiver and patchouli. Rich and animalic yet clean — One Thousand and One Nights, bottled.
To me this smells like opening a rosewood chest that has held oud chips and old silk for fifty years. Aldehydes lift the lid with a clean spark, Bulgarian rose blooms once, beautifully — and then agarwood and civet take over, rich and animalic and completely unapologetic. Ambergris, musk and vetiver keep it wearable, somehow even clean at the edges. It is One Thousand and One Nights with the polite parts removed. A masterpiece, and a test. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
