Composition
Perles de Lalique by Lalique is a 2006 Floral Chypre fragrance for women, composed by Nathalie Lorson. It pairs Bulgarian rose and iris with bourbon pepper, patchouli and cashmere wood in a modern chypre structure. It won a Marie Claire best-perfume award in 2007; the opal flacon echoes René Lalique's 1928 'Cactus' powder bowl.
It opens with a voluptuous Bulgarian rose, spicy-sweet and full-bodied, touched with powdery orris. The heart is where it gets interesting: bourbon pepper — green, pungent, almost olive-like — woven through creamy iris and transparent patchouli, like silk with an edge. The base is soft cashmere wood and tonka, elegant and restrained. This is a thinking person's floral, perfect for Indian winters and formal evenings when you want to smell refined rather than sweet. Not for beginners: the peppery chypre character is distinctive and the rose is unapologetically rich. Sample first — but if it clicks, nothing else smells quite like it.
