Composition
Encre Noire by Lalique is a woody aromatic fragrance built around a single accord of vetiver and cypress. It opens on a dry, inky burst of cypress and settles into a spare heart of Haitian and Bourbon vetiver. The drydown pairs cashmere wood with musk in a minimalist, ink-black trail.
This smells like writing with a fountain pen in an empty library at midnight. Cypress hits first, dry and inky and almost black — not a green cypress, a shadow of one — and then the vetiver takes over: Haitian and Bourbon vetiver, rooty and earthy, like wet soil and old paper. It is spare, severe, beautiful in the way a charcoal sketch is beautiful. Cashmere wood and musk in the base soften it just enough to wear. There is no sweetness here, no comfort, no apology. It is a scent for people who like their solitude dark and their ink permanent. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
