Composition
Clair de Musc is Serge Lutens' 2003 luminous musk, inspired by moonlight and Debussy's Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun. Bergamot and neroli petals open over Tuscan iris powder, dissolving into a crystalline veil of pure white musk. Chaste, transparent and serene — the antithesis of the animalic Muscs Koublaï Khän.
To me this is moonlight on white sheets — bergamot and neroli bright as the first hour of night, then iris and musk, powdery and cool as marble. Sandalwood underneath is the wooden bedframe, and the white musk just goes on forever, clean and luminous. The neroli is green-orange blossom, bright as a struck match, and the iris is cool powder — together they make the musk feel like cold light on skin. Lutens at his most tender: a musk that glows in the dark. The quietest loud perfume I know. Beginner-friendly.
