Composition
Velvet Haze is Byredo's 2017 woody-oriental by Jérôme Epinette, inspired by 1960s music and the daze of artificial paradises. Coconut water and hibiscus open into patchouli leaves, over cacao absolu, musks and ambrette. Opulent, hypnotic and earthy — a psychedelic vortex like the beauty of a bonfire.
To me this smells like a 1960s haze in the best way — artificial paradise, and proud of it. Coconut water and hibiscus open tropical and strange, sweet but not sunny, like a tiki drink sipped in a dark room. Bergamot keeps it from going full syrup. Then the patchouli arrives — earthy, chocolate-dark, with cacao and osmanthus giving it a boozy, apricot-leather depth, tuberose narcotic in the mix — and the ambrette-musk base is all soft skin and smoke, cashmeran humming underneath. It is a trip, and it knows exactly what it is doing. Beginner-friendly.
