Composition
Black Saffron is Byredo's 2012 oriental-spicy inspired by saffron's auspicious color in Indian culture and Ben Gorham's heritage. Saffron, juniper berries and Chinese grapefruit open into leather and black violet, over raspberry, cashmeran and vetiver. Warm, smoky and confident — fire, sweetness and smoke in balance.
To me this smells like saffron threads crushed between leather gloves. The saffron opens metallic and electric — that unmistakable crimson spice — over juniper berries and Chinese grapefruit, sharp and strange and immediately arresting. Then black leather and black violet take over, dark and bruised, with raspberry adding a flash of sweetness before cashmeran and vetiver dry it down to smoke and wood. Inspired by auspicious color, and it smells like a beautiful warning. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
