Composition
BergamotStar noteTimur (Sichuan Pepper)Eleventh Hour is Byredo's 2018 woody-aromatic by Jérôme Epinette — a paradoxical composition around Ban Timur pepper and fig, the forbidden fruit. Bergamot and Sichuan pepper open into wild fig, carrot seeds, plum and rum, over cashmere wood, tonka bean, olibanum and labdanum. Melancholic yet optimistic — hope and beauty against the eleventh hour.
To me this smells like the last hour of a long, strange, wonderful day — bergamot and Sichuan pepper fizzing first, electric as a city at dusk, then wild fig and plum, rum-warm, carrot seeds adding an earthy-green strangeness. Cashmere wood, tonka, olibanum and labdanum settle it into something soft and resinous, like embers and blankets. Melancholic yet optimistic — hope and beauty at the edge of the world. Weird in the best way, but wearable. Jérôme Epinette built it around forbidden fruit and Ban Timur pepper — strange, beautiful, hopeful. Beginner-friendly.
