Composition
A 2009 patchouli composition for men. Incense, pepper and Amalfi lemon open into patchouli, labdanum, guaiac wood and jasmine, over sandalwood, cedar, tonka and oakmoss. Earthy, smoky and refined.
To me this smells like the storeroom of an old ittar shop in Old Delhi — burlap sacks of patchouli leaves, dark and loamy, with incense smoke permanently baked into the brick walls. The Amalfi lemon flashes for a second like a struck match, then the pepper takes it dark again. This is patchouli with its shirt off: earthy, rooty, almost mushroomy, wrapped in labdanum resin and guaiac wood that smells like violin varnish. Jasmine hovers somewhere above it all, incongruously pretty, like a flower growing out of a crack in the pavement. Refined, yes — but the refinement of something wild that decided to behave. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
