Composition
Lothair is Penhaligon's 2014 Trade Routes fragrance, inspired by the tea clipper ships that brought exotic wares to British shores. Grapefruit, juniper and fig leaf open into black tea softened by fig milk and magnolia, over ambergris, cedar and wenge woods. Novel, reassuring and woody — the sight of land on the horizon.
To me this smells like the deck of a tea clipper sighting land — grapefruit and juniper sharp as sea air, fig leaf green and milky, and then black tea, brewed strong in a tin mug, softened by fig milk and magnolia like cream. Ambergris, cedar and wenge woods underneath smell like the ship itself: salt, timber, distance. Novel, reassuring, woody — the smell of coming home after a long voyage. Quietly brilliant. Named for the tea clippers, it smells like the best part of a long voyage — the sighting of land. Beginner-friendly.
