AmbergrisA leather chypre created for the GREAT Britain campaign, embodying British creativity and heritage. Lemon, bergamot and clary sage open into rose de Mai, jasmine and violet, over a dominant leather theme enhanced by labdanum, patchouli, oakmoss, cedarwood, guaiacwood, juniper, tolu balsam, carrot seed, orris, styrax, ambrette, ambergris and clove.
To me this smells like a British heritage museum that has come alive — lemon, bergamot and clary sage opening crisp and proper, before the leather arrives: dark, polished, dominant, like a saddle in a Savile Row window. Labdanum, oakmoss, patchouli and clove build a proper chypre backbone underneath, with rose and violet peeking through the smoke like flowers on a battlefield. This is perfumery as history lesson. Grand, stern, and magnificent. The styrax and tolu balsam glow warm and resinous, like polished wood beside a fire. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
