Composition
Bowmakers is a unisex eau de parfum from D.S. & Durga, launched in 2012 and inspired by the violin and bow craftsmen of 1800s Massachusetts. Violin varnish, mahogany and an outdoors accord open into amber pine rosin, maplewood and cypress. Tree resin, cedar and moss form the dry, woody base.
To me this smells like a violin workshop in 1800s Massachusetts, and I mean the actual workshop — not a candle version of it. Violin varnish and mahogany open sharp and resinous, with an outdoors accord of cold air coming through the door. Amber pine rosin, maplewood and cypress build the heart: sticky, woody, alive with shavings and sawdust. Tree resin, cedar and moss dry it down into something dry and solemn, like an old instrument case. It is a stunning piece of olfactory time travel — but it smells of work and wood and varnish, not of perfume. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
