Composition
Amber Kiso is a unisex eau de parfum from D.S. & Durga, launched in 2018 as a retrospective take on primal amber compositions. Incense, cypress and cedar open into maple, patchouli and iris. Leather, hinoki and moss form the dry, animalic base, evoking temple rituals in the sacred Kiso forests of Japan.
To me this smells like a mountain temple in Japan in late autumn. Incense, cypress, and cedar open cold and resinous — smoke and sacred wood — and then maple arrives, sweet and strange, with patchouli and iris giving the heart this powdery, earthy depth. It is primal amber, as promised: amber before it learned manners. Leather, hinoki, and moss in the base make it dark and damp and alive, like the forest floor inside a shrine. It is smoky, leathery, meditative, and completely uninterested in being liked by everyone. A retrospective, a ritual, a mood. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
