Composition
Benjoin 19 is Le Labo's 2013 Moscow city exclusive by Frank Voelkl, inspired by Anna Karenina's fateful meeting at a Moscow train station. Olibanum opens ecclesiastical and cool, enveloped by balsamic benzoin over cedar, amber and musk. Warm, resinous and comforting — rich amber for Russian winters.
To me this smells like a Moscow chapel in winter — olibanum incense curling off the thurible, benzoin warm and vanilla-sweet on the altar candles. Cedar and amber underneath are the old wooden pews, musk the cold air when the door opens. The cedar is dry and pencil-shaving clean, and the musk softens the resin into something almost creamy — incense you could wear to a wedding. Resinous, golden, and quietly dramatic. Inspired by Anna Karenina's fateful meeting, and it wears like destiny: inevitable. Beginner-friendly.
