Composition
Vol de Nuit is a feminine eau de toilette from Guerlain, launched in 1933. It opens with Galbanum, Narcissus, Bergamot, Orange Blossom, Lemon, Orange and Mandarin Orange. The heart reveals Iris, Narcissus, Aldehydes, Vanilla, Violet, Indonesian Carnation, Rose and Jasmine settling into a base of Oakmoss, Orris Root, Sandalwood, Spices and Musk. Its character is defined by Powdery, Iris and Green accords.
To me this is a 1933 night flight over the desert — galbanum green as a dashboard light, narcissus and bergamot and orange blossom and citrus like the last of the day. Then the powdery heart: iris and narcissus and aldehydes, vanilla and violet, carnation and rose and jasmine, like a first-class cabin in another century. The base is oakmoss and orris and sandalwood, spices and musk — the smell of leather seats and adventure. A masterpiece of the powdery green, romantic as airmail. History you can wear. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
