Composition
Shalimar Ode à la Vanille Sur la Route de Madagascar is a feminine eau de parfum from Guerlain, launched in 2012. It opens with Citruses, Bergamot, Lemon, Mandarin Orange and Cedar. The heart reveals Iris, Patchouli, Rose, Vetiver and Jasmine settling into a base of Vanilla, Incense, Opoponax, Leather, Tonka Bean, Sandalwood, Civet and Musk. Its character is defined by Citrus, Amber and Vanilla accords.
This is Shalimar gone to Madagascar and come back changed. The famous vanilla is here — deep, dark, Bourbon-rich — but now there's incense smoke curling through it, leather darkening the edges, and civet adding a feral, animalic purr underneath. Citrus and iris keep it lifted; opoponax and tonka make it glow. It is the most dangerous vanilla ever bottled. Beautiful, but it has teeth. The sandalwood is the creamy pale wood under all that dark vanilla and smoke — like moonlight through incense. It is the most beautiful danger in this batch. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
