Composition
Parfum d'Hermès is a feminine parfum from Hermès, launched in 1984. It opens with Aldehydes, Hiacynth, Galbanum and Bergamot. The heart reveals Bulgarian Rose, Ylang-Ylang, Iris and Egyptian Jasmine settling into a base of Myrrh, Incense, Sandalwood, Spices, Amber, Cedar, Vanilla and Vetiver. Its character is defined by Amber, Woody and Warm Spicy accords.
To me this smells like a museum of perfume itself — aldehydes sparkling like old champagne, galbanum green and bitter as crushed stems, bergamot bright as a skylight. Bulgarian rose and ylang bloom formal and perfect, iris powdering everything like marble dust, Egyptian jasmine glowing in a display case. Myrrh and incense burn in the corner chapel. Sandalwood, amber, cedar and vetiver hold the whole exhibition together, vanilla softening the exit. It is a masterpiece of the old school: green, resinous, austere, and utterly uncompromising.
