Composition
Opone is Diptyque's 2001 woody chypre by Olivia Giacobetti, a spiced rose built on Turkish rose, saffron and cumin. Black pepper warmth and dried-rose potpourri character melt into smoky guaiac wood, leather and licorice. Airy yet desiccated — a rose drying in desert winds.
To me this smells like a rose left to dry in desert wind — Turkish rose desiccated and spiced, saffron and cumin rubbing into it like sand. Black pepper warms the edges, and then guaiac wood, leather and smoke rise underneath, with licorice twisting through like a dark ribbon. It is airy yet completely parched, a rose with no water left in it. Olivia Giacobetti at her strangest and most brilliant. Fascinating, but not a first date. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
