Composition
Much Ado About the Duke is a 2016 Eau de Parfum for men from Penhaligon's Portraits collection, composed by Daphné Bugey. It is a leather fragrance built on peppery rose, gin, woody notes and leather — a fresh, sophisticated rose-leather dressed for evening. The retail pyramid lists pink pepper up top, rose and gin at the heart, and leather, vetiver and woody notes in the base.
Imagine a tumbler of gin with black pepper ground over it, sitting next to a vase of deep red roses and a worn leather jacket. That's the Duke: spicy and crisp at first, then rose-and-leather in the middle, finally drying down to dry, vetiver-tinged wood. It has the swagger of a man who drinks whisky with his father-in-law and charms him anyway. Works beautifully in Indian winters and monsoon evenings; too heavy for a scorching May afternoon. Not for beginners: rose-leather is an acquired taste, so sample before committing.
