Composition
Levantium is Penhaligon's 2014 Trade Routes oriental by Christian Provenzano, inspired by the spice, rum and resin mounds on London's docks. Saffron, wormwood and artemisia open into rose, clove and cardamom, over oud, guaiac wood, amber, myrrh, sandalwood and vanilla. Opulent and smoky — the exotic East, docked in London.
To me this smells like the spice docks of old London — saffron and wormwood in hemp sacks, cloves and cardamom dust in the air, rose petals crushed underfoot. Then the agarwood rises, dark and animalic, over guaiac, patchouli, myrrh, and amber, like the hull of a ship that has seen everything. The peach is a soft ripe flash in all that spice and smoke, and the myrrh is bitter resin — treasure piled on treasure, none of it quiet. Penhaligon's most opulent oriental: spice, rose, and oud, piled high as treasure. This is not a quiet perfume. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
