Composition
Hammam Bouquet is Penhaligon's 1872 founding fragrance, inspired by the Turkish baths beside William Penhaligon's barbershop. Lavender and bergamot open into rose, orris root, jasmine and cedar, over musk, sandalwood and amber. Powdery, elegant and old-world — a watercolor of rose petals on still water.
To me this smells like 1872 in the best way. Lavender and bergamot open crisp and barbered — the scent of a Turkish bath beside a London barbershop, steam and straight razors — and then the rose arrives, old-fashioned and powdery, with orris root and jasmine softening it like talc, cedar adding dryness. The base is pure Victorian comfort: sandalwood and musk, amber glowing warm underneath. It is the oldest Penhaligon's and it still smells like confidence — powdery, woody, utterly unbothered by fashion. Beginner-friendly.
