Composition
English Fern is Penhaligon's 1890 classic fougere — field-fresh clover, lavender and geranium bedded on woods, patchouli and moss. Lavender and geranium open into cloves, over oakmoss, patchouli and sandalwood. Dry, green and spiced — a stiff-upper-lip English fougere with a rich, earthy core.
To me this smells like a field in England in 1890, and somehow also like right now — lavender and geranium opening fresh and herbal, cloves adding a warm, spiced heartbeat, and then oakmoss, patchouli and sandalwood bedding it all down in green, earthy comfort. It is the original fougère, the blueprint everything else copied. Wearing it feels like inheriting something — a pocket watch, a good name, a field you have never seen but somehow miss. The cloves keep it from ever feeling stuffy — there's warmth in the green, like sun coming through old glass. Beginner-friendly.
