Composition
Elixir is Penhaligon's 2008 oriental-spicy by Olivia Giacobetti — a modern dry rose with smoke. Eucalyptus, cardamom and cinnamon open into Turkey red rose, mace, orange blossom and Egyptian jasmine, over incense, cedar, benzoin, rosewood, sandalwood, tonka and vanilla. Complex, resinous and warm — a cult unicorn, now discontinued.
To me this smells like a temple where someone left roses at the altar and the incense never went out. Eucalyptus, cardamom and cinnamon open cool and spicy, almost medicinal, and then the Turkey red rose blooms through — dark, dry, and smoky rather than pretty. Mace, orange blossom and jasmine add a strange spiced-floral complexity that keeps shifting. The base is a slow burn: incense, cedar, benzoin, rosewood, sandalwood, tonka and vanilla, resinous and warm for hours. It's a cult unicorn for a reason — complex, resinous, and not interested in being liked quickly. Not for beginners — beginners stay away.
