Composition
Eau Mage is the limited-edition eau de toilette Diptyque released in 2011 as part of Les Invités du 34, the 50th-anniversary collection, composed by Fabrice Pellegrin. Built on the contrast of light and dark, it pairs green mandarin and rose against ambroxan, cumin, cashmeran and labdanum in a black lacquered bottle. Note: the 2015 Eau Mage Eau de Parfum reissue is a different product.
A flash of green mandarin brightness gives way to something much darker: cumin's sweaty spice, ambroxan's mineral warmth and a shadowy rose oxide, all wrapped in soft cashmeran musk. It is dandyish and refined, sexy in an understated way — like expensive wool and old libraries. The cumin makes it divisive, so this is not a safe blind buy for beginners; but those who love spicy musks will find it quietly addictive.
